Celebrate the Past, Look Forward to the Future

Welcome to a year of celebration!

Boynton Beach Garden Club is 85 years young in 2023. Our club has been in existence since 1938, when a small group of women decided they wanted to beautify their little farming community. Today, while the Boynton Beach community has grown by leaps and bounds, we are not so different from that group of founders. In 2023, we are 48 members strong and growing, a group carrying forward the desire to learn and then share our knowledge of plants and ecology, tending the environment to create a better and more beautiful place to live in.

Where do we go in our next 85 years? It is safe to say our founders never envisioned the sprawling community Boynton Beach has become, the environmental and ecological challenges we face, or even the innovations, such as digital technology that we all must learn to use simply to keep the club functioning.

This year, under revised Bylaws, we will be employing a new leadership structure designed to help us operate more efficiently. Also, we will be meeting in a new space, First Presbyterian Church in Boynton Beach. (Wait until you see their beautiful courtyard and gardens!) And, last year’s Fashion Show was such a success that we are holding another in the Spring. The Field Trip Committee was busy over the summer, planning great outings for us to socialize and at the same time enjoy the tropical landscape of southern Florida. We even have a trip planned to learn about sugar cane production in the state. Other opportunities abound through our regular programming including topics such as various styles of floral arranging, gardening techniques, and even cooking with herbs!

Of course, none of these programs/activities take place without members’ involvement. Remember, it is more fun to be involved, so I encourage everyone to attend the meetings, volunteer in the Butterfly and Community Gardens a few hours a month (We go for coffee afterward!), help plan our Earth Day and Arbor Day activities, work and attend the Fashion Show (Bring friends!) and donate items for the raffles. As you can see, the list of opportunities to socialize while doing something worthwhile goes on and on.

The Boynton Beach Garden Club – in its past and present – provides many important benefits to its members and the larger community. As we look toward the next 85 years (Whew!), let’s continue through our various activities to be good stewards of the land and encourage others to do so as well. And, enjoy ourselves while doing it!
